Red Rock Reservoir

R&K recently completed a shoreline protection project for the US Army Corps of Engineers at the Red Rock Reservoir located just outside Pella, Iowa. Located on the Des Moines River, this is the largest lake in the state of Iowa. Project scope included shot rock and riprap protection of two select areas on the lake shoreline, a cemetery, and a public recreational area. Slopes were established with base rock, and a newly utilized gradation of 1600# riprap was placed as final protection. With the help of local truckers and Cantera Aggregates rock quarry, the project was completed quickly and successfully.

Mid Lake

Mid Lake

A ten-county region in north central Missouri has spent the past 21-years planning for construction of a lake that will provide drinking water to over 50,000 customers. Over $118 million of funding has been secured for the future lake. RK Excavation assisted a local 8(a) contractor with roadbed construction this past construction season. The construction team divided the 4-mile corridor into seven excavation sections that balanced. Articulated trucks pulling 32-CY pans moved material efficiently across the corridor. Undercutting of soft areas was required across three low areas near the location of future bridges. Once the embankments are constructed, they will be armored with 60,000 tons of Rip Rap under this same contract. Future contracts will tie the new roadbed into existing state highways ahead of the proposed dam construction.

Marion National Cemetery Expansion

Marion National Cemetery Expansion

The crews at R&K Excavation are participating in the Marion Cemetery Gravesite Expansion as the site’s excavation contractor and crypt installer.  The cemetery dates to the Civil War and has areas of historic significance.  The excavation plan had to be modified to save several historical trees.  The 5-acre footprint first had to have sanitary and storm sewer pipes relocated and new pipes installed.  Next, the site was excavated and the underdrain system was installed and connected to the newly constructed storm sewer. Crypt delivery was coordinated to coincide with placement production.  String lines and laser graded equipment were used to align the crypts into sections. Crypts were set on the open graded stone and underdrain system and backfilled with pea gravel, clay and topsoil. R&K Excavation also excavated for the columbarium subcontractor, placed the foundation drain, and backfilled after construction.

Hulah Dam

Hulah Dam

R&K Excavation was contracted by Tulsa District- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to demolish the existing relief well collection system, install new perforated and solid wall pipe, and reconnect the relief wells. The Hulah Dam project involved installing a new 24” solid pipe discharge line, a 5’ X 10’ collection manhole, two weir measurement manholes, and connection into the existing collection system.

Copan Dam Toe Drain

The crews at RK Excavation are working to complete a relief well collection piping rehabilitation project for the Tulsa District. The Copan Dam project includes digging up all the existing collection piping, installing two weir measuring manholes, 5,650’ of 12” solid wall collection piping and 5,650’ of 12” perforated pipe. Twenty-six new 5’ X 10’ manholes will also be installed and then 37 existing relief wells will be connected to the new collection piping. The relief well water flow will be collected in the solid wall pipes and the shallow groundwater will be collected in the perforated pipe. The final part of the project involves regarding over one mile of drainage swale and rebuilding the dam’s service road.

Levee Slide Repairs for the Memphis District – USACE

R&K executed task orders in three separate areas of failed levee sections in the vicinity of Memphis, Tennessee. Work included clearing, stripping, grubbing, debris disposal, excavation and recompacting soil for levee embankment. Other aspects of the work included moisture control of the material, placement of geotextile fabric, gravel placement, and establishment of turf.
